Machete. The Machete is the second most powerful weapon in Project Zomboid. This can be found in hardware stores and also in or on zombies after the 30-day mark. Machete is a long blade, lighter in weight, easy to carry, and easily available. Many weapons are great but you can get this one and it can be extremely useful.

Any weapons you use early in the game will break quickly. Chop trees or use somethibg durable like a crowbar to bash zombies to level it. Late game- spears are still the best melee weapon, and with high spear skill, maintenance, and carpentry they last longer. Katana is also deadly but hard to get. Indeed, without the metal spears mod (not a must have for me, but definitely on my "common sense" shortlist for mod heavy runs), spears are best as an opening weapon imo. Great for clearing out the those groups of 3-6 zombies wandering around in the street outside your target, but best set aside when close quarters or hordes are on the menu.

I think that the best weapon strategy is to carry two short blunts on your belt and a long blunt or a machete on your back. I mean you always have a hammer on your belt anyways, it's a good backup weapon.
