I'm almost at the slot limit with no crashes (the only time the game crashed for me was the earlier bug with choosing grey portraits wrestlers online, or alt tabbing sometimes). It's most likely to do with the image count. Some downloaded wrestlers might have too many images or something and push the game over the limit.
