Other software may not have the exact same tools as Zbrush, but if you actually care, you WILL make the compromise to get your work done. If you wont make the compromise, you likely don't really care. Blender is a great option with tons of plugins available. Mudbox was abandoned by Autodesk, but is EXTREMELY affordable (something like $40). The only thing less functional in Blender than the sculpt mode is the painting mode. By far the worst part of sculpting in blender is getting a usable base mesh. ZBrush comes with a large set of presets, and using ZSpheres to block things out is so much better than any of the alternatives in Blender. It's just not good. Things like IMM brushes and the ability to fully customise and create them as well, and it handles alphas in a much more intuitive and simple way than blender.
