I tried using a small little in-line filter once -- failed. The 1300 is a gravity feed system and the introduction of a small filter did not allow enough fuel to flow fast enough to the carb. The screens keep out the bigger stuff, I found only small sediment in the carb float bowl. Using a fuel system cleaner (Seafoam for one) helps a lot.
