Another possibility is you have a stuck transfer case indicator switch/sensor giving you a false indication light. Look at the transfer case selector lever ...if it is in 2WD then the switch is likely stuck. The driveshaft always turns but you should be able connect and disconnect power to rear wheels using the 4x4 switch. The TIPM (the fuse box under the hood - AKA Totally Integrated Power Module) senses how much power draw there is from the bulbs.
