Johnson outboard timing adjustment.
Symptom 2: Lack of Power. If the outboard engine timing is off, it will reduce the performance of the engine. Especially when you try to accelerate, it will not be as smooth or sluggish as you move forward. Therefore if your outboard is not running as it should be, it indicates that the timing is probably off.

The pointer is called a timing fixture but it is really a tool to adjust the ignition to fire as close as possible to 180 degrees apart. Any kind of a tool would work as long as it was straight and fasten to the crankshaft If you set one set of points you could put the pointer between the marks.
