We've had ours for about two years and initially thought the app would be a waste but honestly I'd say it's worth the extra cost. Most of the time it's not needed at all, but on those rare occasions when we're gone for a day or two and it glitches or the cats mess with it too much (one still is obsessed with surfing mid-cycle), it's been incredibly handy.
