my experience with sbc vs bbc. when mildly modified, if you have say a 400" sbc (406-434) and a 400" bbc (396-427) If both engines make the same amount of hp, say a 500 hp 434 sbc and a 500 hp 427, the small block will build more torque than the big block. that contradicts most all beliefs about sbc vs bbc.The 383 is meant to be a higher compression engine, using either the 5.7" or 6.0" rods. 400 uses a 5.5" rod. The less oversquare you have in an engine, the more torque that's produced. But, as has been said before, BBCs offer more cubes. A simple 60-over 454 displaces 468, so if its big cubes you want, you have to go BBC. But if we're comparing a 400 SBC and a 396 or 402 BBC, Hands down, I'd pick the SBC. Its all in what you want. In terms of FB385 vs. 383, a 383 will make a little more power (20 to 30 HP) and they have a flatter torque curve. But it's harder to make that power because the bore/stroke relationship is more "truck-like." If you think about a pro-stock engine, they are large bore short stroke and so they have very good cylinder fill characteristics.
