Jan 18, 2016 · No. Rope stays in cleat and the safety hitch stays. You loosen the rope slightly while on the cam and hitched and work it up the tree. Works great. Flinginairos has videos on YouTube (search guidos web, part 1, part 2). My setup is almost exactly the same. I use 1-3 sticks with 5 step aiders to get to up to 22 feet. Before you cut down your sticks, you need to watch this video. Cutting down to 22" is a huge mistake that will lead to stick failure!!!

Last year there was a thread with climbing stick mods and a member posted a detailed parts list. Thus far a search has not turned up the thread. At that time, I went to the local hardware and bought 4 sets for my Hawk Helium sticks.....but didn't write it down other than a handwritten note that I apparently tossed.The ropes are lighter and overall quieter. I do have the buckles on the straps covered with kayak grips but even just pulling the strap tight can cause a bit of noise on quiet days. I measured and figured I had about 1/4" of threads with a 2" bolt but it didn't work out that way. Barely had enough to thread on the nuts so I have to go back for some 2.25" or 2.5" hardware. If you make your own spacers be sure they are the right length so the rope binds as you put weight on your steps. I am using 7mm rope.
