Yes, you keep the progress when you abandon a mission. I always chose lua exterminate so i can clear the room of enemies before killing Sentients. Just makes life easier.

Paracesis, as mentioned by others, is the absolute best anti-Sentient weapon in the game. It resets damage adaptation on hit, has bonus damage against Sentients, and can equip sacrificial mods to further boost damage against Sentients. Outside of Paracesis, infuse Xata's Whisper from Xaku and use a high fire rate, crit biased weapon.
