In my personal experience, the Dana 50 will take about 2.5 - 2.75 quarts to fill to the plug. As far as I know, the D50 and D60 use the same case, so they SHOULD have the same capacity. I just changed my gear oil in the front and the fluid capacities I've seen posted says 4 pints (2 quarts), but that much won't fit in. At about a 1.3 qts it starts flowing out the fill hole.

You did it right. The Dana 300 takes a GL5 rated gear oil, same as the diffs. No additives needed. The transmission however takes a GL4 rated gear oil or synchromesh fluid. A gl5 rated oil has too much sulfur in it which affects the synchromesh parts. I wish I had taken a photo when I did mine last, but FYI: there is a depression at the bottom of the Dana 30 case (at least on my 04) that holds approximately a cup of oil that won't drain out. I removed the remaining oil by absorbing it with some rags and then cleaned out the grit that had settled at the bottom of the depression.Always fill to the proper level regardless of capacity listed. If it's a '75, it will be a 9 1/4", it will have the 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern, as will the '77 model axle and any other 1/2 ton axle built between '75 and '79. In '80 they went back to the larger 5 on 5.5" bolt pattern. You can swap parts but if you swap the entire axle you will end up with mismatched wheel patterns.
