I just changed my gear oil in the front and the fluid capacities I've seen posted says 4 pints (2 quarts), but that much won't fit in. At about a 1.3 qts it starts flowing out the fill hole.

You did it right. The Dana 300 takes a GL5 rated gear oil, same as the diffs. No additives needed. The transmission however takes a GL4 rated gear oil or synchromesh fluid. A gl5 rated oil has too much sulfur in it which affects the synchromesh parts. I wish I had taken a photo when I did mine last, but FYI: there is a depression at the bottom of the Dana 30 case (at least on my 04) that holds approximately a cup of oil that won't drain out. If it's a '75, it will be a 9 1/4", it will have the 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern, as will the '77 model axle and any other 1/2 ton axle built between '75 and '79. In '80 they went back to the larger 5 on 5.5" bolt pattern. You can swap parts but if you swap the entire axle you will end up with mismatched wheel patterns.
